Part of FR2 Friday Evening 2
About This Performance
The Ninth is Mahler’s final completed symphony. Mahler knew he was ill, but whether he intended this symphony to be experienced as a leave-taking is still being debated. Nonetheless, the masterpiece is the mature, profound expression of one who has mastered his art over a lifetime. As demonstrated by Gustavo Dudamel’s acclaimed Mahler festival in 2012 here and his numerous recordings, it’s hard to imagine a more suitable musical match than our conductor and the music of Gustav Mahler.
